 A Song in the Darkness

A brooding silence lay upon this gully; hanging ominously above the heads of resident creatures present like a thick, matted blanket invisible to the naked eye. No birds stirred. No beast showed itself.
Danger was near.
Tentatively, a prairie hen slowly moved its head to of the bushes; moving in that jerky movement inherited by most birds-- one bright brown eye glinting in the feeble shafts of sunlight that filtered down from above. After a few more seconds of her head ticking back and forth, the hen gave a thin cry and moved out into the open.
This, however, proved to be a fatal mistake.

What could be first guessed to be a curtain of moss stirred slightly; quavering, before folding back wards to tuck tightly to the side of a large green mound...
Even more abruptly, a ridged neck rose from the ground; sporting several deadly-looking spines.
On the end of this muscled neck was a head.

An intelligent reptilian eye swung around to stare at the terrified hen; a thin film known as a sort of 'second eyelid' sweeping across to clear specks of dust and dirt from the green dragon's slitted pupil and iris.
A hackle slowly raised to bear glittering white teeth, each as long as a large Flamberge that would take the strength of a bear to lift. Between these teeth came a terrible hissing rattle...
The beast's claws tapped lightly on rock, which quickly became dust-- for acid dripped profusely from her jaws. It bubbled, a hissing concoction that ate away at the quartz lump until it became no more than a charred mess.

then, the bird saw no more as a blast of the corrosive saliva erupted from the green dragoness' jaws.

The Muse was always grumpy after being woken from her naps...

Spreading her moss-hued wings wide overhead, she shook her horn-crested head with jaws open wide; trilling a victory cry loud enough to shake the leaves off of several trees nearby.
A shadow slid over her back, causing the green Dragoness to look up. Lo and behold, there was Ryaco...

Ranael's hackles bristled. She had thought this land to be uninhibited, but that wasn't true, apparently.

She reared back on her hind legs; coiled her leg muscles, and leaped streight off the ground. Once at the highest arc of her jump, the dragoness' wings unfolded with a dry rustle-- followed by a slight 'snap' noise when the wing membrane caught the air current.
Once a reasonable distance away, Ranael circled, taking a good, long look at Ryaco.

Ryaco swooped with the air current as the dragoness flew into the air. Flaping his black wings he moved away, but not all the way away. Circling back he looked at ranael.

A rattling hiss came from her gaping maw; her crest of horns creating a howling moan from the airstream that wove between each individual spike. Her jaws gaped, and from between her sharpened teeth welled a song.

This was no ordinary song-- this melody was sung in a lovely tone, with a honey sweetness that was hypnotic; painful, yet addicting. It assaulted the listener's ears yet made them yearn to hear more...

"Thy soul shall find itself alone
'Mid dark thoughts of the grey tomb-stone;
Not one, of all the crowd, to pry
Into thine hour of secrecy.

Be silent in that solitude,
Which is not loneliness- for then
The spirits of the dead, who stood
In life before thee, are again
In death around thee, and their will
Shall overshadow thee; be still.

The night, though clear, shall frown,
And the stars shall not look down
From their high thrones in the Heaven
With light like hope to mortals given,
But their red orbs, without beam,
To thy weariness shall seem
As a burning and a fever
Which would cling to thee for ever.

Now are thoughts thou shalt not banish,
Now are visions ne'er to vanish;
From thy spirit shall they pass
No more, like dew-drop from the grass.

The breeze, the breath of God, is still,
And the mist upon the hill
Shadowy, shadowy, yet unbroken,
Is a symbol and a token.
How it hangs upon the trees,
A mystery of mysteries!"

As yet another scent assailed her nostrils, Ranael flared her wings and roared loud and long in outrage; a cry like the scream of a banshee and the trill of a dying griffin plummeting to earth with feathers flung into disarray.

"Who dares... Who dares to invade my privacy?!

With another shriek, she performed a half roll and dove for the crater; leathery wings outstretching at the last second to slow her fall until she landed with a dull 'whump' that send gravel spraying into the air and peppering the surrounding foliage mercilessly.
The Dragoness' rattling breath gained a more pronounced hiss when her slitted eye landed on the crouched form of Sukaro-- keeping her wings up so the two talons at the peak locked together and eclipsed them both in darkness.

"So a youngling invades... tell me young one, have you never heard of a polite entrance?"

A hissing laugh welled up from the savage muse's throat; causing the large female to stalk closer with the crunching of stone under her claws. Her angular head jutted forward aggressively, bladed tail lashing back and forth to cause devastation in the surrounding greenery.

Her slitted eyes regarded the cowering dragon before her with distaste.

"I take it you don't belong to a gang... no, you don't have their stench, otherwise I would slay you..."

A puff of acrid smoke curled up in twin vapor trils from her hinged nostrils as she thought out loud, sniffing the small female's scent from a distance and analyzing it with her nimble intellect. The flanges on her brow and jaws glinted slightly as her neck bore her head up and away in an 'S' shape, the muse losing a bit of her fury to give the youngster a bit of grim advice before lofting herself into the air to circle above.

"Beware the daemons of the wind such as I-- we belong to no clan or gang, and do as we please... Remember that the elder dragons might be more powerful, but you can flee faster than ones such as us."
